A protective relay is a device used to trip a safety fuse whenever a fault is discovered. It is one of those components of electrical power supply a safe more trusted delivery system. It is an important role in reducing the faults and damage in the event of faults. When a fault occurs in the protected circuit, the relay attached to the current transformer and potential transformer initiates and closes its contacts. Current then flows from a battery in the trip circuit. Protective relays have a finite lifetime in terms of how many times they can open and close. However keeping a relay constantly energized, does not wear it out. It is also used for detecting overload, voltage transformer for both high and low line voltage as well as for detecting Earth leakage.
